About Us

We look forward to welcoming you!

La Lanterne Bed and Breakfast (chambres d’hotes) has been serving guests for over 15 years. We are honored to continue hosting travelers to this historic, picturesque village that is one of France’s best kept secrets. Guest satisfaction is our overarching goal as we hope to share this gem of a place from our hearts to yours.

Our journey of continuing as keepers of this medieval building began on our own honeymoon when we stayed as guests of La Lanterne. We fell in love with both La Lanterne and Sarlat as we felt so welcomed and relaxed here. Years passed by, and the opportunity to continue the business as owners arose. Knowing this was a once in a lifetime opportunity, we gained ownership of La Lanterne in 2018 with hopes to share this incredible place with others. We live in the USA with our four children, and our amazing management couple operates La Lanterne on a daily basis.  Your daily hosts are Noel from South Africa, Jana from Germany, and the new guest relations manager Nanouk from Limoges in France.

“We have been traveling extensively for the last 25 years of our lives and managed everything from small hotels in Scotland to private islands in the Pacific. We were lucky to live in some of the most beautiful places of the world and now enjoy our hospitality passion here in France surrounded by breathtaking nature, history and cuisine, whilst having the opportunity to be closer to our families. Nanouk joined us in May 2023 and is a good spirited, friendly little fellow who you will be falling in love with soon after your arrival.” - Jana and Noel

The Property of La Lanterne

The most centrally situated Bed & Breakfast in Sarlat, La Lanterne is a quiet oasis in the jumbled weave of alleys and passageways that gives Sarlat its world famous charm. Dating back to 1503, this stone built property with its shady courtyard is nestled in the heart of the Medieval town. Sarlat boasts of the highest concentration of medieval buildings in the whole of Europe–and it’s all at your doorstep!

Literally in the heart of the town's historic centre, La Lanterne B&B could not be better situated for you to discover and enjoy the wonders and delights of Sarlat. Make your way through the cobbled streets and alleyways of this beautiful and mesmeric medieval town, made even more intriguing by night when the town takes on a special ambiance as the old fashioned gas lamps cast their warm glow over the honeyed stone of the historic buildings.

Sarlat - the Dordogne at your doorstep

With almost two million visitors a year it always comes as a surprise when our guests tell us that they had never heard of Sarlat before. Maybe that is because the French like to keep good secrets to themselves or that outside of France, the Travel programmes haven’t caught on to what the French have known for years about the largest medieval concentration of buildings in Europe.

The French, and to some extent, the Spanish have been visiting Sarlat in droves since the Malraux decree of the 1960’s saved the town from the bulldozers of modernization and perfectly preserved this medieval jewel to be enjoyed by future generations.

It’s the France of dreams. Set a few kilometers from the sparkling Dordogne River, this small town of honey coloured stone basks in glorious light and sunshine that blesses the region with wonderful seasons of plenty.

Not content with sitting on its architectural laurels, the town constantly strives to bring the best in Art and Culture to the forefront. Preserving both history and heritage through festivals such as the Truffle and Goose Fairs, the town also looks to the future with exciting theater, musical, and traditional productions throughout the year.

All guests who stay with us wished they had planned on longer stays as three nights only gives two full days, scarcely giving a chance to enjoy Sarlat to the full, let alone the jaw-droppingly beautiful surrounding countryside. The area is known locally as the Golden triangle, stretching from the Dordogne to the Vezere River to the Capital; Perigueux and Sarlat sit right in the middle! See our Discover Sarlat tab for more details about local activities to enjoy during your stay.
